Mission: To strengthen and inspire leaders of the social sector and their partners in business and government.  Robert Carney Named Executive Director of Generals in Transition and Speakers ProgramOctober 15, 2004: NEW YORK-- The Frances Hesselbein Leadership Institute announces that Mr. Robert J. Carney on October 11, 2004 became the first Executive Director for the Generals in Transition and the Investment in America Forum Generals Speakers Program. These programs are collaborations between the Institute, The Conference Board, and the Mandel Foundation, and are managed in cooperation with the U.S. Army (they are not programs of the U.S. Army and are not endorsed by the U.S. Army). Generals in Transition helps bring the unique leadership character, skills, and experience of retired U.S. Army General Officers to senior leadership positions in the social sector and in non-defense businesses. The Speakers Program helps bring active-duty General Officers as speakers to a wide variety of high-impact speaking venues. Both programs grew out of the first Investment in America Forum, held at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point, NY) in 2002. Robert J. Carney brings his own strong character, skills, and experiences to this position. He has been a manager with local, state, and federal agencies, working with elected officials, corporate leaders, social sector agency heads, community-based organizations, and volunteers. He has been a project director at the Vera Institute of Justice (New York City), at the New York State Department of Health, and at the Coalition for the Homeless. Earlier assignments included working for New York City Mayor David Dinkins, for the New Jersey Administrative Office of the Courts, and for the New York City Department of Probation. Robert earned his B.A. at the University of Colorado at Boulder, and his M.A. at Rutgers University. He also held a Graduate Fellowship at the University of Michigan Institute for Social Research.
